Department Of Sanskrit

Jagannath Kishore College, The premier institution in purulia district, was inaugurated in the year of 1948, where all the subjects of arts, science and commerce streams are taught in the under graduate levels, Sanskrit is also one of the subjects which is taught here from the very inception of teaching, but it was in the pass course level, not with honours course. The number of students were comparatively few at early period. There were two full-time lecturers at that time in Sanskrit-(1)Sri Upendranath Bhattacharya and (2)Sri Swapan Kr. Chakraborty. After retiring Sri Upendranath Bhattacharya ,Sri Rajendra Prasad Das joined in Sanskrit department in the year 1984. After that The college authority applied to the University of Burdwan for opening honours course in Sanskrit in our college, we got a quick and positive response from the university authority in this regard. Dr. Srinibas Mishra, The former principal of our college and Sri Rajendra Prasad Das acted remarkably with their untiring effort in this matter. As a consequence, honours course in Sanskrit was introduced in our college as well as first time in purulia district from the academic session 2002-2003. Only nine students started with progress in that year. Four students out of nine got first class and the remaining five got good percentage of marks in final examination due to best efforts of  Sri Swapan Kr. Chakraborty and Sri Rajendra Prasad Das. Over time, many respected teachers have come to serve this department, till now Dr. Rajendra Prasad Das has been serving as the associate professor and head of the department. The distinguished result of the students of our department in comparison with the Sanskrit departments of other colleges of our district draws attention to all. It is pleasurable that at least five to ten students of our department achieve first class result in the B.A.(H) final examination per year. Now the average number of students getting admitted in Sanskrit department of our college are not less than fifty. At present many of our ex-students are teachers and professors of various schools and colleges. Also many of our students are researcher of various reputed universities. Three students of our department got  university gold medals respectively in the years 2014,2016 and 2017. Some provisions of rewards are now introduced in our department to encourage the students. The prominent of the rewards is “Surabharati” which is initiated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad Das, head of the department. Thus some references are given regarding the on  growing development of the department of Sanskrit of our college. We are eagerly hopeful to get the generous assistance of all the well-wishers for making our department thrive full-fledgedly in the offing
